Wikivoyage:Destination of the month candidates

Here we determine which articles are featured on the Main Page as Destination of the month (DotM), Off the Beaten Path (OtBP) and Featured travel topics (FTT).

You can nominate any article you would like to see featured. Any destination, region, itinerary or event that passes the "What is an article?" test is eligible for nomination.

However, before nominating, please check that the article follows these basic guidelines:

• The nominated article should have an article status of guide or star. This includes having at least one good picture, and listings/headers/etc. that match our manual of style.
• The nominated article must not have been featured since Wikivoyage became a WMF project in 2013.
  • See Previous Destinations of the month, Previously Off the beaten path, and Previous Featured travel topics to check.
• If the article has been nominated previously but failed, any objections should be addressed before nominating it again.
  • Check the slush pile.
  • If you think a once-slushed destination is now ready to go, list it as new, but with a pointer to the slush pile entry.
  • The article should preferably be nominated 3 to 12 months before the intended feature date; ready to feature as is, or with edits that can be done well before featuring.

Well-known and/or popular destinations should be nominated as Destination of the Month, while more obscure destinations should be nominated for Off the Beaten Path. Featured Travel Topic includes travel topics, phrasebooks, itineraries, and other articles not part of the geographic hierarchy, as well as airports, railway stations, and public transportation networks, as these are not usually destinations in their own right. Where applicable, you should propose a good time to visit the destination as a month to be featured.

You can comment on any nomination based on timeliness and adherence to the criteria above, just add a bullet point (*) and your signed opinion.

Please note that the following are not considered valid reasons to oppose a nomination:

• "I don't like it." All objections have to be based on the guidelines above: poor formatting, missing information, etc. Personal opinions, dislikes, etc. do not count.
• "Wrong time of year." Articles are supported or opposed based on their content. Timing can be worked out later.
• "Wrong type of place." Articles are supported or opposed based on their content. Whether it's DotM or OtBP can be worked out later.

If an article gets three comments in favor and no (unresolved) comments against, it's eligible to be placed in an appropriate time-slot in the Upcoming queue. If the objections are relatively minor and are being worked on, add them to the Upcoming queue tentatively (add a question mark "?" after the article). Feel free to move the queue around or swap articles if it makes sense. If a nomination clearly does not make the grade and if the objections are not easily fixable, they go into the Slush pile (current slush pile).

Once a nomination has been scheduled, an appropriate banner image and text blurb must be selected. Go to Wikivoyage:Destination of the month candidates/Banners to start that discussion.

Discussions for previously selected destinations are kept in the Archive.

The following queue should contain about the next few months' worth of upcoming destinations. Note that new DotMs are rotated in on the 1st of each month, OtBPs on the 11th and travel topics on the 21st.

Try to avoid overlapping or back-to-back features from the same country, or destinations within a day's non-flight journey, as well as long streaks of features from the same continent. Try to represent each inhabited continent at least once a year. It is customary to wait 24 months between articles from the same city, or within commuting distance.

The schedule is not cast in stone. However, any change made to the schedule should have a compelling reason behind it, and should be effected as far in advance as possible of the article's scheduled term on the Main Page. In particular, unless absolutely necessary, we discourage nominee articles from being slushed or rescheduled after banners have been made for them, which usually happens 2–3 months before being featured.

Whenever an article becomes a current feature, it should be removed from the list, the discussion archived, and (when changing out Featured Travel Topics) a new month added to the end of the queue.

The section below provides an opportunity to see what the upcoming featured articles will look like on the Main Page using the banners that are currently most popular on the above page.

On the date of the scheduled change, the DotM, OtBP, or FTT should be changed as close to midnight UTC as possible. This can only be done by administrators. When the featured page is changed, please follow the following procedures to do so and archive content to the appropriate pages. At each stage, please double-check that you are correctly moving content. Several steps involves copy pasting of the file names of the Main Page banners – former, current, and next – so it can be useful to open those in tabs first.

1. Update the featured articles on the main page by replacing the current 'banner' template section with those of the appropriate banner for the new DotM/OtBP/FTT found in the Next change section above.
2. Update the Photo credits page with the banner's original image, title and attribution.
3. Add the former featured article to the appropriate archive page: Previous Destinations of the month, Previously Off the beaten path, or Previous Featured travel topics.
4. For the former featured article, add the appropriate parameter to the pagebanner template (directly after the image filename) to label the page as having been featured previously.
   • For former DotMs, add: |dotm=yes
   • For former OtBPs, add: |otbp=yes
   • For former FTTs, add: |ftt=yes
5. Remove Template:Featurenomination from newly featured article.
6. Archive the newly featured article's nomination. Simply cut-and-paste the nomination section of the newly featured article from this page to Wikivoyage:Destination of the month candidates/Archive.
7. Update the Next change section above by adding the banner from the discussion page. View the table in the Schedule section above to determine what next month's change will be, then update the image and blurb in the "Next change" section with that found in the upcoming featured article's nomination.
8. In the schedule, use <s> and </s> to strikethrough the newly featured article. Remove the row from the table if the newly featured article is the FTT.
9. Archive the newly featured article's banner by cutting-and-pasting all banner suggestions and the associated discussion into Wikivoyage:Destination of the month candidates/Banners/Archive.

Time to feature: Good weather and events year round. Possibly at winter, when few North American cities are featured. We featured San Diego International Airport in November-December. It is not close enough to invoke a 24 month cooldown; featuring Hollywood for the 2026-27 winter would be reasonable. Do the Oscars or the Golden Globes provide any events for the public? /Yvwv (talk) 14:00, 5 March 2026 (UTC)reply

There are apparently some events with a limited number of places such as the Official Oscars Watch Party, and for "just" $70,000 you can buy a ticket to the Golden Globes. So yes, but it's not something you can decide to do on a whim on the day of the events. Place: Vienna/Inner Stadt Blurb: Vienna's world heritage-listed Innere Stadt, dates back to the Roman era and contains a plethora of architecturally and historically significant sites. Time to feature: Any time of the year, but I prefer December for the Christmas markets (they were amazing) but it could also be featured anytime during northern spring, summer or autumn (Jan/Feb might be too cold). This article was slushed in 2021, but has improved since then. Lacks information on safety, but has the essentials.

Time to feature: Any - the weather is unsurprisingly fairly similar throughout the year Nominated by: Ypsilon (talk) 16:48, 26 April 2026 (UTC)reply Comment: Why not a South American destination for November's slot which is the next one that needs a destination? It's a quite extensive article, though as is often the case, many listings are almost 10 year old. Therefore, a couple of hours of googling is needed to delete closed places and add coordinates and update information; also Eat needs to be split up into price categories. As usual I'd say 1-3 months before the article is featured is a good time to do this.

• Needs work. I appreciate the article and I did some work on it, but the prose can still be more tight and effective. While that is a requirement primarily for star articles, I think more needs to be done before featuring. Some things could, e.g., be moved from By bus to Bus travel in Mexico or Mexico#By bus (unless they are common sense globally), such as "When you are ready to get off, you can either push the button on top of the hand rail, or if you're not sure of your destination, tell the driver where you would like to get off or point to the destination using a bus map." – I doubt this is unique to Cancún. I also doubt that we need a whole screenful to explain how to use the local taxis. I am also a bit worried about the description of Cancún as "the gateway to the Mayan World" – formerly also "home of the Mayan archaeological wonders" – as there are Mayan wonders all around the Yucatán, and the archaeological sites of Cancún aren't even mentioned in Maya civilization (other than in the description of Museo Maya de Cancún). Cancun is not known for its Carnival celebrations however the February timeframe is ideal for beach experiences as the crowds from Christmas vacations are gone and the crowds for Spring Break have yet to arrive. Unless we find more world-famous Christmas-themed destination such as previous Rovaniemi or the Vatican (Bethlehem isn't a good destination now), it makes sense to feature a city with a nice Christmas market for December, as there aren't many other reasons to visit Central Europe (except ski resorts) that time of the year. /Yvwv (talk) 14:30, 29 August 2026 (UTC)reply

Oslo itself featured in 2020. "Coolcation" to northern Europe is in vogue.

This would otherwise not just be the 4th Nordic feature in the first half of 2027, but we also do not have enough months to put all the European DotM nominations in next summer. Overall, I'm starting to think that we should be able to run any article during any time of the year (i.e. scrap the "time to feature" requirement), this would help scheduling a lot. Place: Gotska Sandön Blurb: A peaceful national park island in the Baltic Sea, small enough to walk around in a day. Time to feature: June to August Nominated by: Yvwv (talk) 00:36, 8 April 2026 (UTC)reply Comment: This island barely meets the minimum size for a destination article (as it has a hostel, a campsite, and a couple of attractions) and can therefore be completely described in a short text. Not much more to add, except climate data, and details on amenities. Sweden has had a couple of featured articles before, but all of them have been cities or city walks.

Vietnamese articles have been featured mainly as DotM's, but as this article states clearly that Quy Nhon is "unspoiled by the ravages of mass tourism", "in stark contrast to the commercialism and development of other Vietnamese cities" and "still off the radar of international travellers", this would be definition be an OtBP. However, I'm sorry to say, even a bit too well-developed, especially the History section and some descriptions could be shortened down a bit. The other required fixes are listings lacking coordinates, and as usual places that have went out of business and dead links will need to be dealt with (and prices updated if possible).

I've never spent much time in town though, I think for most travellers it's a pit stop/logistics hub for Olympic National Park. Três Coroas seemed like a really interesting place. The Portuguese version was at guide status but maybe not quite up to proper guide status here at en-voy, so I added some more information from Wikipedia and websites of businesses and updated/deleted outdated content.

Some days ago when I nominated the article, there was some info in the article about getting around the town (by bus and rental bike), this has been moved up to Get in by User:Sunfish Dash. I think it was me who moved it, as I saw it as related to getting in by bus, not so much getting around. I agree that renting a bike 5 km away is doable (Jiaoxi is a neighbouring township), but stops on the way between the two don't help if you want to explore the rest of the township (the remaining 30 km of coastline). Are there no bike rentals in Toucheng itself? No public transport? If so, it needs to be told. Apparently coaches can take you to some "major destinations" and there are local trains. That information was and remains in Get in, but has been clarified a bit by Sunfish Dash. Comment: We have had a recommended 24-month cooldown time between nearby destinations. "Nearby" is most practically defined as commuting distance, which would be two places which could reasonably be experienced on the same day or from the same accommodation, without lengthy transportation. If we follow the guideline strictly, this article could first feature in January 2027; in my opinion, December 2026 would not be too early. A far better solution is to choose a better banner image that captures some of the magic of cycling in Japan and not praying that a reader will see non-existant bikes or read a caption. The attention grabber is the front page image (above), which contains a prominent bicycle. Since they need to click on it first, their attention has already been duly grabbed by the time they see the banner.

• Needs work The article is surprisingly light on actual cycling details. Do city roads often have cycle lanes, or are there off road cycle tracks in the suburbs? We are told that you may have to pay for parking at a station, but how easy is to find bike storage at/near hotels, shops or museums. At the moment the article only really introduces cycling as an activity, not as a means of transport - how practical would it be to cycle from Tokyo to Kyoto?
