- I'm not sure on this one. I think there should be some kind of disclaimer on phrasebooks with odd or obscure scripts not supported by every browser or loads very slowly (which is still an unfortunate reality for many parts of the world). //shb (t | c | m) 21:25, 11 June 2026 (UTC)
- What makes more sense is having a generic template for non-Latin scripts. Since this is not Wikipedia, where we are liable to deal with all kinds of nuanced edge cases and localized versions of names and actual articles about obscure writing systems, there's a pretty minimal amount of non-Latin writing, especially outside of phrasebooks. ―Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 21:58, 11 June 2026 (UTC)

- Would it be enough to just tell people -- in a template message or at Wikivoyage:Welcome,_newcomers, or both -- that they should enable Unicode support (w:UTF-16?) in their browser if that is not the default? - Keep. Having odd rectangles telling the Unicode code points in any listing telling local names and addresses is confusing; some readers may think our site is broken. Explaining the issue and giving advice for installing the needed font(s) is useful – once there [at the destination], it is nice if one's device can show those local names and addresses. Wikivoyage:Meitei script display help should be rewritten, though, probably with links to step-by-step instructions on browser sites.
- Unicode support (for me, w:UTF-8 rather than UTF-16) isn't enough, you need the fonts. What other scripts aren't supported by default in the most common browsers? For me, e.g. Tibetan has the same issue. I assume smartphones may support fewer scripts. Thai? Georgian? Inuktitut?

- Mine (Firefox on Debian) doesn't support Meitei, Tibetan, or seemingly even Korean by default (while some other odd scripts show fine). Adding the fonts is easy, though. I assume "hit or miss for more obscure scripts" is what to expect on most platforms. –LPfi (talk) 08:57, 12 June 2026 (UTC)
