The module already add an anchor, why you added it in the template as well? Andyrom75 (talk) 18:20, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Just understood that you want a second anchor with Wikidata instance, instead of listing name. In this case I can centralize it in the module.
That said, I wouldn't incentivate the use of any of those anchors, because a listing can be deleted and there's not wiki-native tool to check if an anchor target exist or not. Andyrom75 (talk) 16:56, 19 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Is this about allowing linking listings instead of just the page where the listing is supposed to be? I think that's a very important feature. Landing on a page without the listing is frustrating, as is having to search for the listing, which may be named differently from on the linking page. If you end up at the top of the page despite an anchor in the URL, you know that there has been a change. If you didn't have an anchor, you don't know whether the listing ever was there.
I think it is useful to have anchors for all of name, alt and wikidata id. Name and alt are often swapped and they may be edited (for several reasons), while the wikidata id is somewhat obscure (and there may be no wikidata item for the place).

FTT update

Hi SHB2000, thanks for updating the FTT earlier today. But I noticed you (by mistake probably) moved the discussion for Filipino cuisine to the archive instead of that of Tagalog phrasebook which we feature now. So I moved the discussion of the latter to the article and returned Filipino cuisine to the discussion page. Ypsilon (talk) 17:30, 21 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

See vs do?

  1. Is a beach a "see" or a "do"?
  2. Is there a page anywhere that explains what's a "see" and what's a "do" ? Purplebackpack89 21:09, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hey Purplebackpack89, for your first question I would say it all depends on what the beach is known for. If the beach is known for its natural beauty, then I'd put it in see; if it's for recreation / swimming, then I'd put it in do. There's no hard and fast rule on this, though, so whatever you think works will work. :)
    For the second one, I think you'd be looking at WV:ABC. //shb (t | c | m) 21:25, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes. If some beaches are useful to take a look at the sea and others for spending an afternoon, you may still want to have them in the same section. It's a judgement call. There are short discussions in the article templates (Wikivoyage:Big city article template & co) and I believe a more thorough one somewhere – I don't find it now. –LPfi (talk) 21:33, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't remember there being any thorough discussion on this (though I might be forgetting) – the topic of beaches hasn't really come up much on this site. //shb (t | c | m) 21:41, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
No, but we have discussed other POIs, and I believe we have written guidance on some page. –LPfi (talk) 21:47, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
    Ah, right, I get what you mean now. //shb (t | c | m) 21:51, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Maybe it's just me, but I'm as confused as before lol. My apologies. Purplebackpack89 01:12, 9 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
    tldr really is just trust your instinct and judgment – there's no hard and fast rule on this site. :) //shb (t | c | m) 02:51, 9 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

I think you might be interested in m:Archive.today incident. WhatamIdoing (talk) 03:54, 23 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Interesting, thanks for the link – I've vaguely heard about this issue in passing conversations, but I didn't really expect this issue to be this bad (and thank goodness we don't actively use archive urls unless absolutely necessary here for that to significantly impact this project :)). //shb (t | c | m) 03:58, 23 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, this project's in pretty good shape, though a quick check through all the various .tld variations would be warranted. Special:LinkSearch shows that there's one on a User: page. Do we care about talk pages? Purchasing a kimono has a lot of archived links, but mostly to the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. WhatamIdoing (talk) 04:12, 23 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
BTW, I would not be surprised if this ends up on the global blacklist. AFAIK no such discussion has even started, and probably not until most of the clean-up work is done, but sentiments are running high. WhatamIdoing (talk) 04:14, 23 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Easily – I expect a global RfC to be started sometime, and I also expect that to garner plenty of opposes; I still think most people will be supportive of that idea as this isn't an issue that targets a specific project. //shb (t | c | m) 04:17, 23 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think user pages and talk pages are fine (if they were already present), though not a bad idea to add it to our local blacklist (or maybe a public abuse filter). //shb (t | c | m) 04:16, 23 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
btw I've created Special:AbuseFilter/89 (public filter), though set to tag only. I think it should eventually be set to disallow (plus the fact that we don't normally use archive links), but we'd probably need more community input for that. //shb (t | c | m) 04:30, 23 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

WV Server administrator

Hi @SHB2000. By any chance, do you know who I could contact regarding changes to the server configuration? I'd like to allow uploading .json files, which is done in LocalSettings.php. Maybe it's global/the same for all wikipedia projects, in which case it's not possible I guess. Cheers, -- andree 14:19, 27 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Do you need to upload them locally? Changing the settings will require some local discussion before submitting for approval. Otherwise, see c:Commons:File types#Data files. –LPfi (talk) 14:47, 27 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Basically I "need" database of POIs we have around here, and it's about 6MB (compressed), something like User:Andree.sk/Listings0.js. It can be almost any format, I could probably hack it and put (=hide) it into a big-ish JPEG file, but I think it would be better to make it not obscure :-) Putting it on wiki commons doesn't seem like a good fit, noone would probably need this for anything outside WV... Also, I foresee, if this catches on, it'd be updated e.g. monthly. So keeping it in the main space as a 'regular article' also isn't the best idea. -- andree 16:36, 27 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think it should be discussed in the Pub, although few will have any clear opinion on it. Of course, having people at Commons discuss our jsons is less than ideal. Probably the same configuration as on Commons would suit us (perhaps with more limited upload access), but does anybody know how the Commons data namespace works? –LPfi (talk) 17:36, 27 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Another problem is that, I think, ultimately (if the feature works + is voted for) write access to the respective data "file" would have to be limited (e.g. to our interface admins)... So that, too, wouldn't probably work with Commons. -- andree 18:02, 27 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah I think so too – I'm not really familiar with .json file uploads, unfortunately. @WhatamIdoing, Andyrom75, Jdlrobson: might have a better insight than me. //shb (t | c | m) 18:43, 27 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
My experience with JSON is limited to knowing that the formatting is very, very picky. WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:49, 28 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
I personally would recommend uploading to Commons. It has support for editing JSON already (via associated gadgets) and is likely to continue doing so in future. If it was to be enabled here a lot of that tooling would need to be ported over and maintained. Given the limited resources in this community in the technical space I think commons would be the path of least resistance. Also production issues relating to large JSONs are likely to be better prioritized.
If you encounter pushback from the commons community it would be helpful to understand what specific pushback you are getting.
Just my 2 cents. Jdlrobson (talk) 05:46, 2 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ah I just saw your note about limiting to interface admins. What is this 6mb going to be used for? Where does it get loaded? How is it going to be generated? Jdlrobson (talk) 05:56, 2 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Andree.sk, if all you need is a config change, then see m:Requesting wiki configuration changes for the process. WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:14, 28 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Middle East warning box

Hi, SHB2000,
just on your warning box middle east, perchance could it be expanded to Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia (not on the top of the lead section) but in the Stay Safe section?
Thanks,

Suggestion for changing image of Asia in continent section.

I want you to change that colour of Asia continent here. Change that pink colour and add green colour there, you can also exchange colour with South America continent's colour as mentioned there. Anikmolla786 (talk) 20:30, 26 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

What's the reasoning behind doing so? //shb (t | c | m) 21:18, 26 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I can give you multiple valid reasons. Honestly, the pink just looks a bit off for Asia. Most maps use green for big landmasses, and since Asia has so much greenery—jungles, rice fields, forests—it feels more fitting. South America already has green, so swapping them would keep things balanced. Plus it’d make the map easier on the eyes. Just thought it’d look cleaner. Most of the Muslim population living in Asia continent specially in West Asia. Green is a one of the religion symbol in Islam. Giving green to the largest continent is it’s right to get that colour. Pink is usually use for women, Asia is very large can't be consider as a woman. Look you can not even add any colour to asia, just keep it standard without any colours. But not pink or yello or any other female like colours no. If you want more reasonings behind it, just reply me. Think about it like a editor. Anikmolla786 (talk) 21:34, 26 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh are you referring to the pagebanner, or the map on Destinations? //shb (t | c | m) 22:20, 26 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah. Check it and also fix it, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seven_Continents_(political).svg Anikmolla786 (talk) 22:24, 26 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Look I wouldn't put too much weight into the colours – but pinging @Sbb1413: who created that map. //shb (t | c | m) 22:26, 26 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Do something. Anikmolla786 (talk) 22:28, 26 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
No, I don't see why...don't do the same stuff here that landed you an indef on enwiki. //shb (t | c | m) 22:31, 26 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I haven’t even tried to edit anything or do something wrong here. I was just trying to communicate with you. If that made you feel bad, then I’ll end the conversation here and won’t bother you. No hard feelings. Learning something without any help or guidance isn’t easy. No edit war. Now I’m starting to feel like asking questions is a crime around here.
Don’t take any action—sorry. I made a mistake by asking you to do something. I thought people here were friendly. Sorry again. Anikmolla786 (talk) 22:46, 26 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I forgot this map entirely. Look, the pink colour is Europe, and Asia is in red. I think the pink colour of Russia is causing this illusion. Or some users are colour blind. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 04:19, 27 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah. I found it red or deep pinkish-red, which can feel anybody in first look that it's pink like! Congratulations, bro. You gain steward ranking in 5 years. Anikmolla786 (talk) 07:25, 27 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Rail travel in Finland

You wrote "I would love to see a rail travel in Finland article – one that breaks down all of VR's ticketing systems, network coverage, and also a bit on night trains." The article is in place since some time, but I wonder whether essential things are missing.

I think VR tickets are quite straight forward: buy single tickets on the net, or from the machine at the station if you are in the last minute and know there is one at that station. If the "one adult" doesn't apply, you'll find a number of discount categories; children, students and pensioners are described in the last paragraph of Rail travel in Finland#Tickets. I hope you get group discounts automatically, but I haven't had a need for them lately, and I think they are less relevant today. Other tickets are relevant only in special cases, such as for commuters or somebody intending to spend a lot of time on the train. I have not been using any special tickets, other than the 10-trip commuter ticket (which is nice in that you avoid the last-minute prices, even if the discount otherwise may be quite small).

I might be wrong – does the ticket system, or the description, look confusing? Are there special cases that need explanation?

The trains run on behalf of the capital region HSL may be confusing, but I think the second paragraph makes that clear.

Night trains are described in Features and service.

Do you think the article covers what it should, or does there need to be more advice on some aspects? Are other tweaks needed?

LPfi (talk) 09:02, 27 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

I think from what you've said, what the article covers seems to be pretty solid. Does seem a lot more straightforward than Rail travel in Germany#Tickets for sure (the system in Europe I'm probably the most familiar with). //shb (t | c | m) 09:29, 27 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

CEE Newsletter is out now!

Dear all,

The first CEE Newsletter issue of 2026 is now live, and we are happy to share it with you.

You will find highlights from community activities, updates from the CEE Hub, international news, and a wide range of contributions from across the region. It is a good snapshot of what we have been working on together at the start of the year.

As always, thank you to everyone who contributed -- by writing, sharing updates, or supporting behind the scenes.

Take a moment to explore the issue and see what is going on across the region: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CEE/Newsletter/March_2026

As always, we have prepared a Russian version of the same issue: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CEE/Newsletter/March_2026/ru

Summer of Wikivoyage 2026 in Albania and Kosovo

Hello SHB2000,

I am Vyolltsa from the Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group. I wanted to share a quick update for our upcoming Summer of Wikivoyage Edit-a-thon in 2026. This year, we are focusing on Durrës, Albania, and other travel destinations in Kosovo and Albania in English. This edit-a-thon will take place offline from May 8 - 9. We are also inviting everyone to join us online Saturday from 10:00-17:00 (GMT+2) Time Zone on here.

Could you please update the Albania and Kosovo Expedition pages for 2026? Thank you! --Vyolltsa (talk) 08:43, 8 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
